The European Union (EU) has introduced new directives on electrical and electronic equipment that restrict the acceptable levels of certain hazardous substances in a wide range of raw materials, finished products and packaging. The legislation also promotes recycling, and regulates the disposal of waste. Similar directives are being introduced in other parts of the world. Importantly, these measures impact all manufacturers who wish to sell within the regions covered, and place a clear obligation on companies to monitor and control the composition of their products.

XRF Solutions from PANalytical
PANalytical has a range of systems and reference standards with which companies can prove the compliance of their products.

    Epsilon 5
A polarized, 100kV EDXRF spectrometer specifically designed for the low-level determination of heavy metals. Fast, cost-effective and easy-to-use, Epsilon 5 provides optimal XRF analysis for a range of applications, covering the analysis of the regulated elements down to sub-ppm levels. When used in combination with certified reference materials (CRM's) dedicated methods can be set up. These include the analysis of toxic elements in plastics, and the analysis of Cd and Pb in brass.

    TOXEL
A set of certified standards for the analysis of the toxic RoHS elements in polyethylene. These standards were developed in co-operation with DSM Resolve to comply with the requirements of the polymers and plastics industry.

    MiniPal 4
A cost-effective benchtop EDXRF spectrometer suitable for monitoring the main elements of inetest. With its new high-resolution SDD detector, MiniPal 4 permits a quantitative XRF analysis of Cd, Cu, Zn, Ti, Br, P, Pb, Sb, Cr, as well as other elements found, for examplie, in pigments, flame-retardants or UV stabilizers. The system's compact design and portability make it ideal for quick measurements made during process or quality control, where it provides a straightforward pass/fail result. It can also be used as a backup to main systems throughout the whole supply chain - upt to the final product and including recycling.

    Axios
A range of advanced, flexible WDXRF systems used in a variety of industries to analyze elements across the periodic table. The use of IQ standardless analysis software allows easy determination of the total composition of unknown samples, or those for which no suitable CRM's are available.
